Biography:

The original Human Torch, Jim Hammond, is an android created in 1939 by Professor Phineas T. Horton. Designed to be a synthetic human, Hammond spontaneously combusted upon being exposed to oxygen. Horton initially sealed him in a containment chamber.

Eventually escaping containment, the Human Torch learned to control his flame and fought alongside other heroes during World War II, notably as a member of the Invaders with Captain America and Namor. He was considered a prototype for later superheroes.

In modern Marvel continuity, Hammond was discovered inactive and studied by S.H.I.E.L.D. His advanced technology and durable construction made him a valuable asset. While initially not actively involved in missions, his expertise and powerful flame abilities have been utilized in various S.H.I.E.L.D. operations. He is often depicted as a somewhat melancholic figure, reflecting on his long life and the many changes in the world.
